Hearing impairments at work

Most people living with hearing impairments have no problems on the job market. However, there are several factors that can influence how well a person with a hearing impairment functions in the workplace:

  • Greater hearing loss often results in greater communication problems.
  • The higher the level of communication needed to perform work-related tasks, the more difficult it will be for those with hearing impairments.
  • The more background noise at the workplace, the more difficult it will be to hear verbal messages and the like.
  • The more stressful or poor quality a working environment is, the more difficult it is for those with hearing impairments to perform well.

In general, everyone benefits from improved workplace conditions, but particularly those living with a loss of hearing.
